Political Advertisement--Part 1

Choose a candidate who is running for election on November 6, 2012 that you want to research and eventually for whom you’d like to create a political advertisement.

After you have chosen your candidate, you need to do research to decide which issue you are going to help promote for your candidate. Use Google, and the links below to help guide you to some important information on the candidate. Do NOT use Wikipedia as your source. You might want to create a folder in your MA folder called Politics. Also you can create a bookmark folder in your favorites to mark the sites you think will help you. NO PRINTING ALLOWED. Copy and paste into Word for later reference if you need to.

These issues include, but are not limited to:
  • Education
  • Economy
  • Foreign Policy
  • Health Care
  • A major issue of your choice

When you have your candidate and your campaign issue decided upon, tell Mrs Ferris (as in come up and tell her so it can be written down). Do this before class ends on Monday.

Political Advertisement--Part 2

Research and Script Writing Process for
30 Second Campaign Ad
  • Step #1----Now that your candidate and topic have been chosen, find one speech or online newspaper article where your candidate has discussed your chosen topic.
    • Suggestion: Google the candidate’s name and topic:
      • EX: Barak Obama Education Speech
      • EX: Mitt Romney Economy Quotes
    • Save the notes and information into your H Drive
  • Step #2--Find the candidate’s website, copy the URL into your notes that is saved to your H: Drive.
    • You can email the campaign liaison if you would like to ask questions about your topic. The information will be on the candidate's website
  • Step #3---Find five facts/statements from the website regarding the topic for your candidate. Copy these facts into your notes as an organized list:

  • Step #4---Now write your own quote about your candidate’s position/stand on your topic.
  • Step #5--Find images that represent your candidate, their party and your topic (save them to your H Drive so you can get to them, you will need about 12-15 total)
  • Step #6---Begin writing a 30 second commercial for your candidate about your topic. Tomorrow you will get more specific information about how it should be structured but getting the ideas together will make the process easier.

Research and Script Writing Process for 30 Second Campaign Ad – Part 3

Write the audio portion of your script by taking only the most important statements/phrases/quotes and condensing them into the most important 30 seconds.

You must mention your candidate’s name at least 3 times in your script.

You must clearly state your candidate’s position on the topic at least 1 time in your script.

You must use your background research to support how s/he will improve that area if they are elected.

Once the script is to your liking, use the clock on the wall or a stop watch through google, and read the script OUT LOUD to make sure it is EXACTLY 30 SECONDS.
If it is too long, then edit.
If it is too short, add more details.

Save this script into your notes on the H: Drive

Part 3B (some of you began this in Part 2-it is a continuation)

Using Google Images, find visuals to support the audio script that you wrote above.

You will be better off finding higher resolution files instead of thumbnails. Look for larger file sizes to get a better image.

You will need 12-15 images of your candidate, their logo, pictures that represent your topic and whatever else you can think of.

Part 4--Building your commercial

  • Go to www.sliderocket.com (before you log in--raise your hand so Mrs. Ferris can help you log in)
  • Import your images under Media
  • Begin building your presentation
  • It must be 30 seconds in length (no more/no less)
  • Check out this video to see what Mrs. Ferris showed in class

Part 5--Turning in your Commercial

  • View this video for information

Fact Checker--

    • On this site are political ads and the "real" facts behind what is being said.
  • Using the example we did together in class--You are to pick TWO political ads
    • Explain what is the message in the ad
    • What do the facts say about the message?
    • How is your impression of how this ad makes the candidate look?
  • This can be typed, written on lined paper or done in a PowerPoint
  • It must be turned in when it is completed
